PTSD Veteran Changes His Senses using Energy Healing with 'Tapping' Techniqueby Eileen Kurlander on 03/03/13
end of 2014, one million US Troops will come home from Afghanistan and
Iraq. It is estimated 20-40% will look to the Veterans
Administration for PTSD care (Posttraumatic Stress Disorder). But less than 5% will recover
with currently approved VA healing methods.
Several professional counselors I know working at VA centers and military bases desperately want to help veterans, and unofficially use sensory change modalities to overcome trauma. Some practitioners use REM (Rapid Eye Movement), Reiki (Energy Symbol Techniques) and other covertly done healing modalities on the QT (slang-quiet). Independent and off-base practitioners are using 'Tapping Techniques more openly' for PTSD. The Tapping, from EFT, Emotional Freedom Technique or MTT, Meridian Tapping Technique or just 'Tapping', changes the energy systems by changing information (word and meaning language) while activating, or palpating, the energy centers on the body towards self reprogramming. Tapping unfortunately, is not yet an officially embraced energetic approach in the military.
Using the meridian energy system for healing is an age-old healing technique many Master Healers and healer schools teach. Energy and somatic psychologists as well as varieties of energy therapists are adding Tapping into their practices. As reported on Channel 8 news, the science on tapping however is new and slow to emerge. According to Tom Porpiglia, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, 86% of the veterans who have gone through the research program, Veterans Stress Project, have had significant results and have experienced a 66% drop in symptoms. Counselors hope the results of the study will open the door for all veterans, but know the help is long in coming and the need is immediate.
A January 2009 publication in WHP (Church,Geronilla,Dinter) showed a research study done with tapping veterans who had received 6 sessions, showed permanent recovery of energy flow in the meridians, 1 year later--along with normal ranges of HRV (heart rate variability). That's incredible and life changing.
Another energy therapy, Reiki, known mostly in massage or spa environments, was used in a study for Veterans with PTSD. The study, only showed 'some effectiveness'. I feel the study erred by being performed only by nurses, excluding energy healer/energy masters. The study revealed 'significant' differences based on the provider's healing experience. Subjects who had nurses with skills beyond their basic energy technique, had 'very significant' results.
Veterans, like Dan Hoaglan who went through 6-tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, and Kosovo went through their 9 different treatments for PTSD at the VA--all with little to no results. Dan suffered with suicidal thoughts, fears and flashbacks, he sought his own help and found a mental health counselor who employed 'Tapping.' In 6 sessions in 6 weeks, and using the Tapping tools at home, his symptoms dropped by 66%. Big issues got smaller. When faced with stressful situations, they were not as 'big'. Dan uses it as the tool 'in the moment' for quelling nightmares and flashbacks and finds his anger is substantially more able to be quelled.
According to brain expert and somatic psychologist, Dr. Pat Ogden, "Our brains are wired for survival, so in trauma, when we are threatened or endangered, the instinctive, fight/flight, subcorticol brain instincts shoot up and the right amygdala takes over. Our thinking brain, the frontal lobe, isn't active, it actually shuts down and goes into survival mode--along with the body." This pattern repeats in recall and reactivation of PTSD as the brain/body wired for survival, shuts down and goes into fight/flight.
Instead of always being on alert or in hyper-awareness,
Dan can use tapping to help lessen it overall. Dan is able to
tap in the moment to help move his brain out of fight/flight and into
restoring normal energy flow and processing in the brain, thus relaxing the body. It
helps bring Dan back to reality faster. The talking portion of
tapping, along with meridian system tapping activation, or
reprogramming, helps get him focused and into the calmer state where
he can think and is more in control of himself.
Masterful Energy Healing as well as Tapping, can restore normal brain functions so the brain does not stay in the fight or flight-freeze mode. The mind-body-spirit connection can be very helpful in reducing trauma recall, create new neural pathways and lessen the blow from prior occurrences of trauma/stress. The work is to also increase the flow of good information. Healers can assist with this as well as teach tools for home use. Energy reprogramming, through energy healing, tapping, Veteran yoga and reiki types of interventions can be part of the complete answer.
